======================================= Council Manifesto of Michał Górny, 2023 ======================================= We are at a crossroads where the future fate of open source is being determined. Gentoo has always had a unique position of remaining in its own niche, and therefore being able to pursue its own goals, remaining relatively independent of corporate pushes and passing fashions. Now it is more important than ever to focus on our strengths and remain the distribution our users need. The most important issues that this year's Council is going to face are: 1. Establishing the relationship with an umbrella organization and working on a seamless transition from the unsustainable Gentoo Foundation model. 2. Managing the right balance between providing the "bleeding edge" experience that many of our users want and the stability that many of our users need, as well as balance between the access to new technologies and support for older platforms. 3. Ensuring that Gentoo remains open and welcoming community that is lead by public discourse and driven by a reasonable consensus between what we believe is the best solution and what our contributors volunteer to do. I became a developer in late 2010, and I have started actively contributing the year before that. While I may have been getting grumpy, I still am actively working on Gentoo and I think I manage a good balance between experience and having new ideas. These days, I primarily enjoy working as part of the awesome Python team in Gentoo. This involves both the high-level job of maintaining the eclasses and documentation, and low-level bumping of hunreds of packages. Besides this, I maintain LLVM and XFCE. I create and contribute to tools related to package management and QA.
