Community Architecture for Fun and Profit Open source projects generate millions of ideas. How do you decide where to invest your time and money? Once invested, how do you know how you are doing? Here are some ideas. (Proposer: Karsten 'quaid' Wade, Fedora Community Gardener) How do you figure out what to invest in? 1. Does the project have a chance to transform red hat's business? 2. Looking for low cost / high value Company engineers maintain commonly used packages Community maintains niche packages 3. Are people outside RH passionate about this idea? Only giving them permission & encouragement How much permission? 4. Are there clear ways to invest in community capacity? Give the community to do the ability to do the things it wants to do. e.g. Fedora infra. Mirrors and such. 5. Is there a simple plan to get started with aggressive goals? Once you invest, how do you manage? How do you assess health? 1. Progressing toward goals? Anything except high investment / low progress is OK low/low is OK, others are good 2. Does work feel meaningful to contributors? 3. Does community participation grow? 4. Does strong leadership develop? Best community leaders -> Best RH employees
